It ain’t over yet. But I have so many Masters memories from this week that I need to relate them in a couple of installments, even as the tournament is still going on. So, here’s the first:- How wonderful was it to see the Big 3 playing the Par 3 together on Wednesday? Here’s hoping they do that every year, and that it won’t be long before they are also starting the Masters together with the opening drives.
- I am still not sure which shot I liked better that day of the Par 3 - Gary Player’s hole-in-three, which he celebrated with his grandson/caddie, or Greg Norman’s ace, which he celebrated with his caddie/wife.
- I am, however, very clear about how moved I was by Player’s gracious farewell, especially the way he knelt reverently before the 18th green on Friday, and the gallery assembled around it. And Fuzzy touched me, too, as he tried so desperately to hold back tears on that same green as he signed a golf ball for his daughter Gretchen. Heartfelt good-byes to two very good men.
- I loved Augustan Larry Mize coming out of nowhere to shoot an opening round 67, and Greg Norman just coming here at all. It seems strange that Mize is the fellow with the Green Jacket, and Norman is the guy looking in from the outside. But that’s the way it so often goes in golf.
- And I will not forget the high-voltage energy around the first tee this afternoon when Tiger and Phil began their rounds, and the way the gallery seemed to stretch in all directions to watch them play. Imagine the buzz if those two ever filled a final pairing here.
Speaking of which, I need to head out to watch some more of their rounds. Back in a bit.
