OK, none of my initial picks are in the last two pairings today. So, it is time for me to reset, as Joe Biden might say, and offer some new predictions for this, the final day of the tournament. Winner - Angel Cabrera – It’s hard not to root for Kenny Perry, a good guy who is playing very well. But the big-hitter from Argentina gets the nod due to his already having a major championship under his belt. Experience counts, especially at Augusta.
Near-Misses – Steve Stricker and Rory Sabbatini – These two are four and five strokes back respectively, and they have been sneaky good this week. I see them making some noise this afternoon, and applying a bit of pressure. Though not quite enough to win.
Foursome to Watch – Tiger and Phil, of course – The featured undercard of today’s competition, to be sure, and while most people wish these guys were in the final group, they will still enjoy watching these rivals once they tee off at 1:35 p.m. – for their stellar play and sense of the dramatic, and for the intriguing discomfort that seems to exist between them. And who knows, one of them – or even both – might make a run, especially if the course is set up like it was on Thursday.
Dark Horse – I picked Dustin Johnson early in the week, and he has fared well. But at nine back, he does not have much of a chance. So, I am switching to Anthony Kim. If he can go on another birdie binge, look out.
And Can You Imagine? – Shingo Katayama as Masters winner? An entire country would go wild, and he is only five off the lead. But how would his funky headwear look with a green jacket?
