AMEN CORNER ACRES

Kicked back at Amen Corner Acres, the subdivision that abuts Rae’s Creek on the southeastern- most section of Augusta National. This is the part of the course nicknamed by the sportswriter, Herbert Warren Wind, as a testament to the prayerful action there in 58. The strict definition of Amen Corner consists of the approach and green of hole no. 11. The whole of hole no 12, (the 155 yard treacherous par three that sings a siren song for golfers to shipwreck on the hill behind or the water in front.) And the par 5- 13th tee shot, where it might be possible to regain a stroke or two blunting the corner’s damage. You can see why it is such a spectacular spectator draw. And it truly is. The viewing area is unusually large, sloping up from the fairways 150 feet to a matched set of bleachers. The slope is important allowing everyone to see over the heads in front of them. This oblique peninsula is a self contained village, with its own concessions, picnic tables and bathrooms (where the men’s room attendant greets each and every customer.) They even have been blessed with six sided water fountain and a phone bank. Cell phones are verboten but for those with an insatiable itch to stay connected, AT&T provides free calls anywhere in the states. Amen Corner is a place that many people visit and many people never leave. Although today’s action didn’t make it out here till about 1 pm, chairs were being set up as soon as the gates opened by people who only see each other one week a year, talking and laughing and catching up with the neighbors of their home away from home. All they need now is a Neighborhood Watch Program for ruffians like me.Patron Comments
