Mark Immelman keeps a very close eye on the defending Masters champ as he goes around the golf course. And not only because Trevor is his little brother.Mark also happens to be Trevor’s swing coach, a position he assumed last fall after Trevor had spent some time studying under Butch Harmon and David Leadbetter.
“I had worked with Trevor before, and he came to me after the PGA Championship last year,” says Mark, 38, who also coaches the golf team at Columbus State in Georgia, which is currently ranked No.1 in NCAA Division II. “He said he was a little mixed up and wanted to figure himself out again.”
Their work produced quick dividends, with Immelamn the Golfer posting a series of good finishes in late 2008, including a 10th in the Tour Championship. “We went back to basics, to Trevor being Trevor,” Immleman the Coach says. “He came to understand himself again.”
Trevor Immelman approaches each shot quite intently, and his brother says he is simply focusing on a series of swing keys before addressing the ball. “It starts with good ball position, then making a complete backswing before delivering the club down to the target to a balanced finish,” says Mark.
Apparently, it seems to be working. “Trevor’s not scoring very well, but his game is quite solid,” Mark says. “I think he is rolling again.”
Not so much that he will come away with another win at Augusta in '09. But his - and his brother Mark’s - expectations for the rest of the year are high.
