THE FREE AND THE NEAR FREE
Saturday, April 11, 2009
By Will Durst

Will DurstUsually you show up at one of the premier sporting events in the world and immediately memorize your bank’s ATM locations to avoid the service charges attendant to pulling cash out of somebody else’s machine. I’m sorry, “convenience fees.” At the Masters, not so much. Here, the hit your wallet receives is more of a love tap. Sandwiches are either $1.50 or $2.50. That’s it. Coffee is a buck. Soda is a buck. Peanuts, cookies and potato chips. All a buck. Often, first time visitors see the concession prices and start to laugh guiltily. They look at their friends seeking silent assurance they are not hallucinating, then rush to get in line to buy something, anything, feigning calm, afraid that someone in charge will notice and realize the grievous error that has been made and move all decimal points one digit to the right. The programs aren’t $15 or $18.50 or $24.99 for a special limited edition collector’s special. They’re free. Let me repeat that. Spectator Guides AND starting time sheets with a map on the back are free. As is parking. Parking is free. Just like the Super Bowl. Right. And Formica is edible. This year, you can get a picture taken on the Founder’s Circle with the clubhouse behind you, then go to a web site the next day and download your personalized shot in front of the yellow flower Augusta National logo. For free. There may be no free lunch, but there is free parking and a free frozen moment in Golf Heaven and lunch is not a lock to require a co- signer either.
