What's Not to Like About These Pairings
Saturday, April 11, 2009
By John Steinbreder

John SteinbrederOnly 50 players remain in the field after yesterday's cut, at one-over, and what’s not to like about some of these pairings:

Trevor Immelman and Rory McIlroy – The defending champ playing with a kid who’s going to be champ one day.

Sandy Lyle and Dustin Johnson – Lyle is this year’s Joe Hardy, finding the Fountain of Youth after winning here two decades ago, while Dustin Johnson is the epitome of youth and strength, especially when you consider the bomb he hit off the tee at 18 yesterday.

Rocco Mediate and Ken Duke – One fan favorite with a 40-year-old journeyman who is fast becoming one in his first Masters.

Phil Mickelson and Geoff Ogilvy - Think they'll be talking about what happened at the '06 Open at Winged Foot?

Angel Cabrera and Todd Hamilton – A couple of former major winners most definitely in the hunt, just one and three strokes back respectively. Both are playing well, and both have proven they know how to close when it counts.

Chad Campbell and Kenny Perry – Almost refreshing in these days of downsizing to have two Everymen in the final pairing today. No flash. No dash. Just great golf from back-to-basics pros to whom patrons can so easily relate.
