BEAT THE STORM
Friday, April 10, 2009
By Will Durst

Will DurstConditions: partly cloudy with gusty winds. With the emphasis on the gusty. According to the latest radar, the storm system marching in looks like its going to miss us, with the Augusta Weather Center predicting that most activity is likely to be west of Augusta. However, tornadoes, hail and damaging winds are possible in the area from 4pm to midnight. Which is known as covering your butt. Might happen. Might not. Hip waders or picnic blanket? You decide. Can always count on the weather bureau to be as decisive as a North Pole compass. Either way, today, you want to tee off early. And Tiger went off at 10:45, so he might have an advantage over those teeing off later (like Phil Mickleson scheduled for 1:52.) And I know you’re saying, “that’s not fair.” Well, like life, golf, is not fair, as anybody who’s ever hit the pin on the fly and bounced into the back side of a bunker can tell you. I hope Tiger does well. It'll be good for the tournament, good for the ratings and good for his legions of fans. But also because it will be good for traffic. Let me explain. Yesterday, my early a.m. drive into Augusta National from my edge city hotel 10 miles northwest of town, was a breeze. Yesterday, that is. When Mr. Woods drove up the 1st fairway at 1:55 pm. Today with his late morning starting time, traffic was backed up for five of those 10 miles. Took an extra half hour to get here. So, go, Tiger, go. Hope you’re in the final pairing the next two days. For many reasons.
