Random Notes from the First Round of the 73rd Masters

Weather is beyond nice, bordering on the hot already. I know. After Tuesday’s relative Arctic conditions, any complaining shall be dealt with severely. “No egg salad sandwich for you.” Tucked away back at Amen Corner I would not want to be one of the rules guys on 12 today. They are busier than a squirrel neck- deep in an almond sorting warehouse. Looks like some of the players pilfered some of my famous brush and hill- seeking balls. Walking up towards the clubhouse between the 10th and 18th fairways, I am startled by two simultaneous roars. One behind me and one in front. Sounds like they were synchronized. Originating from the 9th and 14th greens. The roar from the 9th is a bit louder since it involves Tiger birdying. Okay. A lot louder. Hardly any merchandize bags seen on the course. Folks must have all received the memo to put off shopping until leaving or they utilized the handy shipping option OR they’ve been here before and pretty much have all the Masters memorabilia they’ll ever need. I’m betting on the latter. The wind ranges from zero to much, depending on where you’re standing and when you’re standing. Weird. Even with some incredible scores the crowd seems a bit subdued. Maybe that’s simply the contrast from the last couple days where they were, shall we say, more exuberant, or perhaps these professional spectators realize this isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon and they’re pacing themselves. So am I. More tomorrow. Patron Comments
