TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS
Thursday, April 9, 2009
By Will Durst

Will DurstOkay, fun and games are over. It was nice while it lasted, but the time for practice is done. Put away the cameras, the funny hats and the noisemakers. No kids taking putts for their fathers today. No dropping extra balls and trying the same chip from the fringe four times. No skipping off the water to the 16th green. The Pros from Dover have entered the building. It’s the difference between a meet and greet in the lobby and the board meeting getting underway. A lot less smiling is in evidence. And not just from the players. This gallery is in business mode as well. The folks attending the practice rounds may be huge golf fans, but tournament day badges are only handed down to the true cognoscenti. Oh, they’ll show you respect at the tee but if you don’t hit a good drive, don’t expect any courtesy applause. These aren’t spectators, these are witnesses. Not less than more than a few of whom could give the players pointers about approach shots and green management. The clumps around the ropes are denser. The hushes before drives are quieter. And their strides are more purposeful. These people have destinations in mind. “I’ll meet you at the concession stand behind the eighth tee at 1:30.” And if you’re not there, prepare to walk home. At Augusta National Golf Club during the first full weekend in April, everyone is ditchable. With this weather, maybe even par.
