These Fab Five will figure on Sunday, but someone is missing
Wednesday, April 8, 2009

Go ahead. Laugh, scoff, call me crazy, but I am not picking Tiger Woods to win this Masters. First off, I’m assuming everybody will take Woods, and if I want to go against the grain, I have to take drastic measures.

It’s called risk/reward, something you’re likely to see more of this year at Augusta National. Word is that the set ups on the famous par 5s here will increasingly tempt players into trying to make eagle, thus recapturing the Masters roars some believe have been missing in recent years.

Here’s my five I figure to roar into the back nine on Sunday:

Paul Casey … He won the Shell Houston Open last week and has proved he has the power and touch to be successful at the Masters. He tied for 10th in 2007 (with a 77 on Saturday) and tied for 11th last year (with a disastrous 79 on Sunday). This is his fifth Masters; he’ll iron out those bad rounds and contend again.

Retief Goosen … He’s been heartbreakingly close to a Green Jacket since 2002, finishing second twice and third twice in that span. He won the Transitions Championship a few weeks ago, and if his putter gets hot, he might finally win his elusive Masters.

Padraig Harrington … Paddy won the last two majors. He tied for seventh and fifth in the past two Masters. Enough said.

Stewart Cink … Gritty player who always lurks near the leaders on the weekend. In his past three Masters, Cink has improved his position in 11 of 12 rounds and always on Saturday and Sunday. He tied for third last year. Gotta like a guy who never gives up.

Phil Mickelson … Heck, he’s won twice this year and tied for fifth at the 2008 Masters. Let’s not forget he’s donned the Green Jacket in ’04 and ’06. Lefty will be a factor in some way, shape or form.

Ditto for Tiger Woods, of course. I’m sure most of you have already picked him to win, but I’ll take the risk/reward that he’ll have to wait another year for that fifth Masters title.
