BEHAVIORAL SCIENCE.
Wednesday, April 8, 2009
By Will Durst

Will DurstThere is no rule book for proper conduct here at The Masters. Mostly it is a matter of simple common sense. Although, it should be said that because of the adherence to tradition there are a few departures in terms of etiquette from modern life, and I would like to take this time to enumerate them.
  1. There is no running at the Augusta National Golf Club. If you see volunteers gathering the ropes together to close the spectator crossings you are allowed to walk briskly to beat the rope.
  2. Blue jeans are tolerated but not encouraged. We are not blue jean people. Try to get in the spirit of things. Wear some green.
  3. There is no prize for being first to yell out “You da man,” after a drive. This is not the Greater Elko Open.
  4. We may be outdoors, but we still use our indoor voices.
  5. It’s called a “golf clap” for a reason.
  6. There are two Watsons on the course. And two Johnsons and Singhs. Spectator guides are free.
  7. Shouting “Get in the hole” after a tee shot on a par 5 was funny the first time back in 1992 at Great Neck but not once since.
  8. Do you really need that third beer? Really? You know you haven’t had a full Masters experience until you’ve tried our excellent hot chocolate. And it’s only a dollar.
