Phil played; Tiger didn’t … What does it all mean?
Tuesday, April 7, 2009
By Tom Spousta

Tom SpoustaIt’s windy. It’s chilly. Perfect football weather, only this is the Masters, golf’s first major, and players have plenty more to worry about than the wind-chill factor.

Suffice to say it was windy and chilly enough for Tiger Woods to eschew playing any practice holes Tuesday. Ditto for Geoff Ogilvy and numerous others in the field.

Phil Mickelson was one of the few who got in a practice round. He stuck to his routine and played early Tuesday. “I didn’t think it was that bad this morning,” he said. “I don’t like to play on Wednesday. I like to just work on my game, practice, and try not to get too tired heading into Thursday.”

Woods was on the other side of the issue (do Tiger and Phil ever agree?), adjusting his schedule around Mother Nature. He plans to play nine holes Wednesday and fine-tune a few things on the practice range. “I was not going to go out there and play (Tuesday), because I’m really not going to learn a whole lot,” Woods said. “These aren’t the conditions we are going to face all week.”

Woods is right. Temperatures are expected to climb into the 70s and Augusta National’s capricious zephyrs will become less angry.

Still, that means players are behind in their preparation, and Wednesday might be akin to last-minute cramming before the big test. Some guys can fall out of bed onto the first tee and play great; others need a certain amount of work to get ready.

Don’t forget to factor that into your Tournament picks. Then again, always expect the unexpected at the Masters.
