Brisk vs Cold
Tuesday, April 7, 2009
By Will Durst

Will DurstOh man. People were complaining. And the clothing choices- much different out there on the course today. Not so many shorts. Lot more zipped up parkas and pulled up hoods. Or as Tiger Woods said in his press conference, “this is Major weather. Just more British Open than Masters.” So, okay, I get it. I mean, yeah, sure, the whole warmth thing is why golf starts the season in Hawaii and spends the first three months in California and Arizona and Florida. And it’s also why one of the greatest golf books of all time is called “Follow the Sun.” And I totally understand why Mister Woods didn’t hit the course today, because with 40 mph gusts he “was not going to learn a lot.” But come on, people. Cold? 55 degrees isn’t cold. Maybe for some folks from California this is cold. Southern California that is. But what did you expect? It’s the first week of April. This stuff happens. This is more blustery, brisk, invigorating, bracing- not cold. This is bottom of the 6th at Candlestick. Easter egg hunt at dawn. Quit your belly aching. Have one of the famous Augusta National hot chocolates. Buy a logo jacket or sweatshirt or turtleneck or blanket at the gift shop and cowboy up. Besides, as they say here in the 706 area code: “If you don’t like the weather now. Wait 15 minutes.” And there’s a lot of quarter hours remaining before we’re out of here.
