Masters Champion Larry Mize is writing an exclusive, web-only, weekend diary for Masters.com on his experiences in his 26th Masters Tournament. The 1987 Masters Champion, who grew up in Augusta and now lives in Columbus, Georgia, shot his third straight even-par or better score Sunday in front of family and friends on the course where he used to work the hand-operated scoreboard..
This was a great day and a great week for me, but the most exciting thing, I think, for the course and the Tournament was that the roars were back, kind of like the old days.
You want to concentrate on your shot and you want to be prepared, but you can’t help but hear the roars out there today and all of this commotion.
When I was playing in my prime, I always though there was a difference between a Nicklaus and Palmer roar and everybody else’s. I guess today, you can say the same thing about Tiger and Phil.
The guy I played with today, Justin Rose, made eagles on holes 13 and 15, so I heard that, but overall it was just a lot of fun.
As for my game, I was pretty encouraged overall. I thought it was a pretty good week. I’m encouraged with where I am and what I want to do on the Champions Tour, which is where I’m playing and concentrating now.
I certainly will be back next year. This course isn’t finished with me yet and I certainly not finished here either.
As for today, I was a pretty proud of what I did. You know I probably left something out there, but I brought it back from being over par on the day to finishing even par (72) and one under for the Tournament.
It was only my second cut made here in nine years and my best finish since 2000, so that certainly is something to be proud of.
The course was set up for scoring today and that's certainly what I tried to do. I wanted to go low early, but that really didn’t happen. The course was nice today, a good mixture of pins, which is what I wanted to see.
Both easy and hard, but still something you can get at with your iron shots.
After my good round this week, I heard from a lot of people. A lot of friends offered encouraging words for my play and I got a bunch of text message from people. That what makes this such a special week, just a lot of family and friends and thankfully some good scores to go with them.
After the round, we just headed back to the house to pack and get ready to go back home to Columbus. I’d love to stay here and watch the Tournament or watch the final couple of holes on TV, but we got a long way to get home and need to get on the road for Columbus (Georgia).
This morning being Easter is always a special time for me. I got up this morning at my parents home and had a quiet time, reflecting on what Easter means to me because of my Christian faith.
Then it was time to get packed and head to the golf course. I did my stretching in the trailer, had a sandwich in the Champions locker room, and was ready to go.
I’m headed to Tampa Tuesday for the Champions Tour and will try to get in a quick practice round, but this is a week I won’t forget for a long time
The roars are back at Augusta National and I think my game is as well.
